What you missed at the Farafina Trust Literary Evening!

It was a great time at the Grand Ballroom of the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites on July 2 2011 as the Farafina Trust Literary Evening took place to mark the end of the 2011 Farafina Trust Creative Writing Workshop. The event kicked off some minutes after three with refreshments for the guests and, more importantly, the opportunity to mingle and meet with their favourite writers! An introductory address was given by Muhtar Bakare of Farafina Trust, and Nicolaas Vervelde of Nigerian Brewries, the sponsors of the workshop, gave a short speech. After this, the twenty workshop participants were presented with their certificates by Chimamanda Adichie, Muhtar Bakare and Nicolaas Vervelde.

Eghosa Imasuen read an engaging excerpt from his second novel Fine Boys, forthcoming from Farafina later this year and, judging from the reaction of the audience, this is one book to look out for! Jumoke Verrissimo and Odia Ofeimun were also present and treated the audience to readings of their work. Workshop facilitators, Faith Adiele, Tash Aw, Adewale Maja-Pearce and Binyavanga Wainaina, also read from their respective works. Binyavanga’s memoirs, One Day I Will Write About This Place, from which he read, is also forthcoming from Farafina later in the year! The final reading was by the guest of honour, Professor Njabulo Ndebele, lover of literature, former Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Town and author of the deeply insightful book, The Cry of Winnie Mandela.

The readings were followed by a riveting question and answer session during which the audience got the opportunity to question and pick the brains of the workshop facilitators. Finally, to bring the evening to a close, was a powerful musical performance by our very own Waje! Outside the hall, there were books on sale, authors signing, pictures being taken and fun all around.

The Farafina Trust Literary Evening provided the perfect opportunity for lovers of literature and the arts to meet and connect, and was a perfect ending for the creative writing workshop. And of course, Farafina Books was there with your favourite African titles at affordable prices!
